The Fall season might be a tough time for anybody juggling school work and writing the perfect college essay. With so many colleges in the U.S and the rest of the world, how do you know which one is the perfect fit for you?

Public vs. Private

Public colleges are funded by the state and local governments and usually have lower tuition prices. Private colleges usually rely on tuition, fees, and other forms of private funding to operate. However, both public and private colleges can offer you a good financial aid package, which makes the cost of attendance much lower.

Location Matters

Ask yourself whether you want to attend a college closer or further from home. Do you like the urban or rural life? Are you okay with being away from friends and family or does the idea of being on your own excite you?

Is school spirit important to you? Schools with a huge football culture like Penn State or Ohio State will have the typical “college experience” portrayed in movies, greek life and all. But smaller colleges can be less stressful and a lot easier to make lifelong friends.

Big vs. Small Settings

The classroom size can shape the way you learn in the long run. Do you learn better in a larger classroom (think 100-300 students) or in a more intimate class with lesser students?

When in college, you’re going to learn that communicating with your professor is very important. Your professor can provide you with a recommendation letter for that dream job or just give you academic advice. But remember, a larger classroom size doesn’t mean the professor won’t be able to help you; it’s just a matter of taking the time to introduce yourself and asking for help when you need it.

No matter what college you choose, it should make you feel safe and that you belong.

Before you go,

  1. Where do you see yourself working in 10 years?

  2. What are some things you for in a college?
